Kathryn Zimmerman, LCSW-C, LICSW
My first career was in healthcare leadership, managing clinicians and envying the work they got to do. Eventually, I made the leap to become a clinician myself, and it was one of the best professional decisions of my life. It’s a privilege to spend my days helping clients build lives that feel more fulfilling, connected, and true to who they are.
My approach to therapy is shaped by my professional experiences, relationships, and years of parenting. Before joining BCS, I worked as an outpatient therapist at a community mental health agency, supported survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence as a first responder, and provided individual and family therapy in a DBT intensive outpatient program for adolescents and young adults.
I work with adolescents and adults, offering individual and family therapy, parent coaching, and support for those navigating grief and loss. I strive to create a space where clients feel comfortable being honest, exploring difficult emotions, and figuring things out without judgment. I draw from a range of therapeutic approaches to help clients understand their emotions and patterns, build on their strengths, and find new ways of responding to life's challenges.
I'm also trained in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), an evidence-based approach that uses guided eye movements and visualization techniques to help people process distressing memories and experiences. ART may be helpful for people experiencing symptoms related to trauma, anxiety, depression, and other concerns. I use ART as a stand-alone treatment when appropriate and as part of longer-term talk therapy, depending on each client's needs and goals.
Alongside my work as a therapist, I'm a certified yoga instructor. I offer individual and group yoga sessions to BCS clients who want to explore how movement and mindful awareness can support their understanding and regulation of the nervous system.
Outside of work, you'll often find me in nature hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, or gardening. When it's time to sit still, I love music (I've been known to travel for a good live show) and books, especially fiction and essays. Cookbooks are a favorite, too, though I'd rather leave the cooking to someone else! I also volunteer with the American Red Cross as a disaster mental health volunteer.
I earned my undergraduate degree from Cornell University, an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, and a Master of Social Work with a concentration in Clinical Behavioral Health from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, where I serve on the Alumni Board.
